🏃♂️ Run, Celebrate, and Give Back: The Legacy of the O’side Turkey Trot
As featured in the Oceanside Living Magazine, November 2024 edition.
The O’side Turkey Trot, celebrated for its breathtaking beachside route, has established itself as one of the nation’s premier running events, earning accolades from Runner’s World Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. Drawing participants from 46 states and 460 cities, the event showcases a fast 5K course featuring flat stretches and iconic Oceanside views—making it a favorite for runners and spectators alike.
A Look at the Race Evolution
Since its inaugural event in 2006, the O’side Turkey Trot has evolved to offer more diverse racing options. Originally, the event featured only a 5K race, but in 2009 a 10K was introduced. By 2012, this 10K was replaced with a 5-mile course, offering a unique challenge for seasoned runners.
This year, Oceanside continues to refresh its race options, replacing the five-mile course with a second 5K.
For those seeking an extra challenge, the new Double Dip option allows participants to compete in both 5Ks—adding an exciting twist for dedicated runners.
The Impact on the Community
While the O’side Turkey Trot brings excitement to participants and spectators alike, the event also presents logistical challenges—particularly with traffic management and its potential impact on local businesses.
Event organizers have worked hard to minimize disruptions, especially in light of the growth and revitalization of downtown Oceanside since the race’s inception. This year’s race aims to balance the fun with smoother logistics, ensuring the event continues to be a win for the whole community.
Supporting Local Businesses
Whether you’re participating as a runner or cheering from the sidelines, be sure to explore and support Oceanside’s local businesses during race day. The vibrant downtown atmosphere—paired with the energy of the race—makes for a fantastic celebration of community spirit.
